SWEET DREAMS: 7 WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR NATURAL HAIR AT NIGHT

July 07, 2016

Your hair style was banging all throughout the day and now it’s time to go to sleep. Will your hair still look cute the next day or a matted mess? By practicing one of these natural hair care at night methods you will ensure great hair the next day. No matter how tired you may be please choose one of these methods to protect your natural hair at night while you sleep.

1.Satin Pillowcases A satin pillowcase is a great hair protector on its own or as a back up if your scarf or cap slides off in the middle of the night. Some women prefer not to sleep with anything on their heads so this is a great way to still protect your tresses and “sleep cute” :-).

2.Satin Bonnets Are the most common way to protect your hair at night. This cap is great for protecting twists,TWA, braids, and puff styles. I like the newer bonnets that have the wide band all the way around to keep the bonnet from coming off while you sleep.

3.Satin Scarves are great for the pressed hair, cornrows, and flat twists. I would recommend if you use satin scarves to also sleep on satin pillowcase to protect your ends that will hang out from under the scarf. Satin scarves are also great for laying down hair and creating waves for puff/ponytail/bun styles.
4.Sealing ends– I first heard of sealing your ends about eight years ago on Nappturality. It is a special process of moisturizing your ends (the oldest part of your hair) with a moisturizer like coconut oilshea butterjojoba oil, or castor oil. Doing this will protect your ends from damage and seal in moisture.
5.Baggie Method- is the process of moisturizing your entire head of hair or just the ends and putting a shower cap, conditioning cap, or if you have a lot of hair a plastic grocery bag on your head or ponytail with a satin cap over top. A lot of women do this to add moisture, growth, and to protect their ends.

6.Re-Twisting/Re-braiding– Re-twisting and Re-braiding at night not only helps maintain a style but also reduces tangles and matted hair. Ladies it’s nothing worse than waking up with flattened hair that was once a fly style. Take the extra time to retwist or rebraid at night to keep your hair looking fresh and healthy. I normally retwist one night then pineapple the next, causing a alternating pattern until wash day.

7.Pineapple Method-  If you have  a wash and gotwist out, braid out, etc pull your hair up into a puff with a hair tie and tie a scarf around it.
